Dr. Ahmed Modibbo Mohammed was a lecturer in the Department of History, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1977 to 1999. He held many positions of responsibility such as the Director of Estate Services, A.B.U., Head of Department of History and Dean Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. In 1999 he was appointed the Director General and Chief Executive of the National Teachers Institute, Kaduna. In 2003 he was appointed Executive Secretary, Universal Basic Education Commission, Abuja. He has authored many publications, which he presented at Conferences, Seminar, Workshops and public lectures at various fora both at local and international levels. In addition, he has contributed chapters in books and journals. He has written three books.
In his service to Nigeria he has worked with various development partners especially in the area of education. Some of these agencies were the UNICEF, UNDP, the Ford Foundation, UNESCO, and BREDA Foundation. He was involved in monitoring, coordination and policy in the education sector from 2009 to 2014.
